What Is a Bunion?

A bunion (hallux valgus) is a bony deformity at the base of the big toe joint, developing when the toe pushes against the second toe and forces the joint to angle outward. Bunions are progressive, they worsen over time, particularly with activity and narrow footwear. There is a strong genetic component.

Minimally Invasive Correction

Dr. Balkaran is certified in minimally invasive bunion correction through advanced subspecialty training. Traditional open bunionectomy involves a large incision, significant tissue disruption, and months of recovery. The MIS approach uses 3mm incisions and real-time fluoroscopic guidance to achieve correction with dramatically smaller wounds.

  • Faster return to footwear and activity
  • Significantly less postoperative swelling
  • Smaller scars
  • Comparable or superior correction to open procedures

Before Surgery

We always try conservative management first: wider footwear, toe spacers, custom orthotics, and padding. Surgery is indicated when pain is limiting daily life and conservative measures have been exhausted.
